Co-op FAQs

How long is co-op?

Generally co-op runs in ten week sessions. We do not meet on major holidays. We also have a winter and spring break.

Our two summer sessions are each 5 weeks long.

What are the registration dates?

Registration dates for each semester can be viewed at https://sjhomeschool.com/co-op/

Where is co-op?

SJHA has its own community space in Voorhees, NJ. It is called The Center for Enrichment by SJHA. Co-op and most of our events happen  there.

Can my child bounce between age brackets?

Absolutely! We are stricter with age brackets in the Early Learners Room (ages 3-4) due to capacity. 5 year  olds can take a mixture of classes in the Early Learners Room and regular co-op, but at least 50% of their classes should be taken outside of the Early Learners Room. At age 5, this room should be treated as a transitional space.

Can I place my child in an older/younger group?

Yes, placement is at parental discretion. Our age ranges are a guide. You know your child best. If there is a problem with a child that was placed in an older/younger class, the parent may be required to be more hands on with that child if it is too distracting for a teacher.

Is this a religious organization?

SJHA is a non-religous organization. Families of all belief systems and configurations are welcome.

Are class fees weekly or are they for the entire semester?

Class fees are for the entire semester. It is a one time charge per class per child per semester.

What school supplies should I purchase?

Unless noted in a class description, all materials are provided. If desired, your child can bring their own writing implement. We encourage students to bring a book bag and nut-free lunch. For the younger kids and any art classes, a smock or old t-shirt is recommended. On occasion we may ask for donated recyclables, such as: egg carton containers, milk jugs, cardboard boxes, etc.

Do we have to stay for the whole time, or can we do half a day?

You can choose to participate in all classes, one class, or something in between!

HELP! The class I want to register isn't available in the registration form.

If the class selection is no longer in the registration form, then unfortunately that class is filled.

There will be no exceptions to this unless you have a situation where a sibling is going to be left out. If you find yourself in this situation, please message “Mandi Arnold” on facebook, or email amanda@sjhomeschool.com, and we will try our best to accomodate you.

What do we need to bring for the first day of co-op?

All materials are provided. If desired your child can bring their own writing implement.

We also highly encourage students to bring a book bag, drink (with a lid), and a packed lunch. There are local lunch options available if you plan to leave for lunch but many eat together.

Is lunch provided?

No. Students are responsible for providing their own lunches. Most students pack lunch, but there are a few restaurants close by available for food during lunch hour.

Are there any restricted foods?

The Center for Enrichment is a nut-free environment.

Can students eat during class?

Unless there is a medical need, we prefer that food be consumed during lunch hour. Some classes will have a themed snack as part of the lesson.

The Toddlers and pre-k rooms are allowed to pack their own mess-free snacks. If you have any confusion on what constitutes a mess-free snack, please reach out to us.

Does The Center for Enrichment have wifi?

Yes, we have our own wifi separate from the wifi Voorhees Town Center offer, as well as a parents’ lounge for working parents.

How hands on do you require parents to be? Is this a drop off service?

We offer a lot of flexibility with our co-op.  We are flexible and have reasonable tasks for everyone and are highly inclusive for working parents.

There may be days where teachers may need help with things from the adults-in-charge, and we may contact you or ask for your assistance. If your child is struggling in a class (ie: navigating a computer) you are required to help them.

While co-op is not drop off, SJHA is one of the most flexible co-ops. Please contact us us to see how co-op could work for your family/lifestyle.

How do you communicate with parents?

We use the Band App to communicate. If you do not want to download the app, you can access it on band.us. If you are using the browser instead of the app, be sure to turn on email notifications so you do not miss any imporant information.

Is there homework?

Generally speaking, no. At home reading is required for some classes, but activities will take place at co-op. Some higher level high school classes will require at home work, but the expectations will be clearly stated.

Do children read in class?

For our book club and literature circles class, the children will read at home. We aim to keep reading flexible since children are unique in their comfort levels with reading. We want to leave room for families to choose group reading, read alone, or even audiobooks.

Occasionally there are specialty classes that require reading or speaking, such as Reader’s Theater or a public speaking class, but that requirement would be obviously listed in the class description.

How do I become a teacher? Are there any benefits?

You can contact us at amanda@sjhomeschool.com if you are interested in becoming a teacher. Teachers receive a discount on the family registration fee as well as priority registration for their children.

If I need to cancel, what are the fees?

There are no refunds once we pass the registration end date listed on our website.

The fees have already been used to cover the expenses of rent, insurance, and the necessary materials for class.

If you need to cancel your registration prior to the due date, you can receive a promotional credit to use in the future for SJHA events or co-op. Or you can get a full refund minus a $25 processing fee.

What happens if we miss a day?

If you cannot be present due to illness or other situation please let us know in our Band app group. We will try our best to let you know what your child missed that day, but due to the hands on nature of many of our classes, some things cannot be made up.

Do you offer a payment plan, or are fees due up front?

SJHA does not currently offer payment plans, however, you can opt for “pay in 4” interest free when checking out with paypal.
