SJHA Fire Remediation Fund

South Jersey Homeschool Association, a registered 501(c)3, exists to fill a vital need in the Homeschool Community. We were started as an inclusive “one stop shop” for homeschooling, providing support to families choosing to home educate their children.

Our mission was to provide a community and resources to families of all configurations and beliefs. SJHA aims to provide non-religious and inclusive opportunities to the home educating community. We are the largest, fastest growing, secular homeschooling community in Southern New Jersey- serving over 700 families. Additionally, we now operate a large almost 4000 sq ft community center where students come together regularly to learn and grow.

Many of you may know the the Voorhees Town Center (previously the Echelon Mall) suffered a fire last Friday, April 19th, 2024. The fire was contained to the food court area, but soot coverage has affected the entire mall, including our facility. Soot is something that needs to be professionally cleaned, otherwise it can be dangerous to handle.

We have been working with our insurance company as well as the Voorhees Town center to ensure proper remediation. At this time, as the fire was not initiated on our property or due to the actions of a representative of SJHA, the liability falls on the Voorhees Town Center and appropriate leasees.

Unfortunately, we have not received payment/insurance information from our landlord and we have been unable to proceed with remediation of the center. Due to the lack of communication from our landlord, we no longer feel that this location is the best option for us.

It will cost an estimated $60,000 to do the following action items:
  • Remediate the soot/smoke damage to our belongings and replace all unusable items.
  • Pack and transport our items
  • Secure a new location
  • Seek legal guidance

We will need to make payments up front in order to move forward with remediating our belongings, so that we can reopen and continue to provide valuable services to our community.
Any funds raised will go directly to restoring our community center. If we are able to secure reimbursement from our landlord, we will use the reimbursement to directly further our mission with: scholarships, accessibility, and aiding in affordability.
Thank you for your continued thoughts during this challenging time.

We love SJHA! The co-op offers so much that benefits homeschool families. My kids love attending classes and events so much, and it’s their favorite co-op they’ve ever been in- and we’ve moved around and been in a bunch! The opportunities that SJHA offers are not found in any other group around. There is an amazing sense of community as well.
We love SJHA for so many reasons! Lilly loves learning in a low stress environment with an amazing variety of classes often not found in schools. She gets to explore so many different subjects to empower her to make the right choices for her future. She has thrived in social aspects as well by participating in many field trips, dances, and chances to connect with other children her age with different backgrounds.
I love teaching at SJHA. The children are so much fun. They are eager to learn. I feel accomplished every time a child gets in touch with the Earth through my Gardening classes or spark their creativity in my art classes.
I must not forget the amazing community of families involved in the SJHA. We are all dedicated to making learning fun. We all have come together for the children. We support each other in so many ways. It feels like a huge family. And we are here for it.
As a long time homeschooling family, SJHA has built a much needed community. Having activities weekly, between field trips, co-op, clubs and meet-ups – there is always an activity to plug our kids in. The support for parents fills a much needed gap. New homeschooling families as well as seasoned homeschoolers connect with SJHA on a regular basis for information, support and encouragement. Co-op brings kids together for cooperative learning. Seeing their friends in classes where they are encouraged to interact and learn together is unlike any learning experience we’ve ever encountered. Bowling League has provided friendly competition while advancing their skills set for the sport. There is no other group like it. South Jersey has been positively impacted by SJHA, it has truly changed the local homeschooling scene on a large scale.
We love SJHA so much. As a homeschooling mom of a teen who has anxiety and is neurodivergent, it is a perfect fit for us. He has the ability to pick classes that he finds interesting as well as having the opportunity to be himself without judgement from others. All the children and adults are so welcoming and loving, I always know when Henry is in a class he will be treated with kindness by both students and teachers. The sense of community is amazing, you are always able to find support whether it’s for teaching, parenting help, or simply emotional support! Henry has made so many new friends, of all ages. We both look forward to co op and all the fun events that are offered❤️
Coming from the background of being a very active family (holding multiple PTA positions) in a blue ribbon school district, we did not take the decision to homeschool lightly. However, when COVID hit and we realized the gaps in my child’s education, we felt we had no choice. A year later, we decided to find some social activities, one thing led to another and South Jersey Homeschool Association was born. What started as a few clubs and meet-ups throughout the month grew to a 100+ student, year-round co-op. My son’s quality of education has grown, his interest in schooling has grown, and his social skills have improved. Additionally, my daughter was non-verbal until 3 years old. In the time since we started co-op her communication has blossomed and she went from non-verbal to reading in under a year.
Our two years with the SJHA has been the highlight of our homeschool journey. The camaraderie and advice from the more seasoned homeschool parents has been invaluable to me as a mom. The classes my kids have been able to participate in have given them a love of learning that couldn’t be replicated in a public school. As the parent of a child diagnosed with multiple anxiety disorders, the flexibility to allow him to stay with me on days he isn’t feeling his best has been a relief.
I have enjoyed teaching classes at SJHA more than I ever expected. I love my students and the relationships I have built with them.
The co-op membership supported me emotionally through a breast cancer diagnosis and helped my family with meals during my treatment and recovery. They were there for my kids to go to during that difficult time.
The co-op and its members are invaluable to my family.

My family and I have been homeschooling for about 12 years. We love the flexibility it affords us to travel and customize our children’s education. Recently I went back to work a few days a week and SJHA has been an amazing resource for us when it comes to being able to have our children participate in enriching courses, exciting field trips as well as offering a community of not only likeminded families, but diverse views and interest as well. This versatility has exposed my kids to many wonderful classes and people they would not have met otherwise. Another wonderful aspect of the program is the ability for multiple caregivers to participate in the education process. My mother who is in her 70’s was brining my children to class and spending time learning along side them, as well as sharing her thoughts and experiences with other children in the community. This interaction enabled her to share and build wonderful memories with her grandchildren and their friends that she may not have had otherwise. We are thankful for this community and see its value not only for our children, but for the community at large. This semester I began teaching and I was very unsure of the process- it’s one thing to teach your own, but another to be responsible for other people’s children. You want to do the best job possible! The administration at SJHA along with the other teachers and parents were so supportive and have helped me to enjoy the teaching experience because I know I can ask for help and I am supported. I know my kids feel the same way and those positive feelings enable them to learn and grow through the center.
